OTTAWA SPORT HALL OF FAME INDUCTEE NOMINATIONS

GENERAL INFORMATION

The Ottawa Sport Hall of Fame mandate is to honour athletes, teams and community leaders who, by outstanding achievement, have brought distinction to the Ottawa region. Eligible to become honoured members of the Sport Hall will be those who have made a significant contribution to the development and advancement of athletic competition or who have helped define and enrich our community through sport.

Nominees may be living or deceased at the time of their nomination and may be nominated as an individual athlete, a team, a builder/media or as a combination of any category. Members of any Ottawa Sport Hall of Fame Committee, or anyone under its contract, are not eligible for selection to the Sport Hall while serving.

CATEGORIES

Individual athlete nominees should have concluded their careers as active players for a minimum of three years before their selection, or have reached their 50th birthday if still active in their sport. The Sport Hall board may waive the waiting period in special circumstances, if such action is deemed appropriate (e.g. winning an Olympic gold medal, or a major tournament).

A team is two or more athletes competing as a unit in a sanctioned athletic event. (Athletes competing as individuals within their sport as part of a contingent in events such as Canada Games, do not constitute a team.) Teams are eligible for selection when five years have elapsed since the team last competed as a unit, or since the event for which the team has been nominated. Team nominations may be made on the basis of a single season performance, or for more than one season (successive years, e.g. 1990-91, or selected years e.g.,1990 & 1992) provided that the level of achievement was similar, and the team personnel was virtually the same each year. Otherwise, teams should be nominated separately. A team shall consist of playing and non-playing personnel to the limit set by the governing body sanctioning the competition.

Builder/Media nominees may be active or retired at the time of their election. Builder nominees must have made a significant contribution to sport and/or demonstrated a commitment to the development and advancement of sport over a period of time. The category includes coaches, officials, organizers, sponsors, administrators, executive members and print, radio or broadcast media.
